Information and Communication Technology in Montessori

In our school computer is included as part of the resources to the children within the aspect of information and communication technology. However debate continous within the Montessori community as to the importance of computers, particularly if they take over the real things or the real experience for children(Isaac, 2007).

In the case of feeling textures of fabrics, leafs, or shell, smelling a flower, etc, can not be replaced by seeing only thru the computer images. Although , children can learn about technology everyday by making technology available to them in the practical life area such gadgets like scales, grinders, graters, telephones. Tape recorders, digital cameras, Cds are also objects related to the everyday technology for young children in our centre.

  1. Hello Lyne, finally I found your blog lol. Yes it's so true that computer may take the children's practical and Im afraid that that will happen with my children too. However, I think that it's our responsibilities as an early childhood educator to remind the children and explain to them that it's important to have a time out from the computer because they will be suprise how they'll ejoy playing outside for example.

  2. I agree with you Kato, it is all about responsibility as adults to supervise young children when they use the internet. In my computer there is a "Family Safety" gadget which I think need to be used to monitor chilren in using the internet. It is also the responsibility of adults to find activities for children besides playing the computer by taking them and experience places of nature like the beach, mountains, or places they can mingle with people. Playing sports is another alternative to take children away from computer games. Thanks for the comment Kato.
